For my three week trip to Vietnam I bought the Eurohike Colossus 65+15 Travel Pack which has a good sized day backpack attached that can be unzipped. Having never done any backpacking before though I'll keep you all updated if it does the job. Hopefully I've picked wisely. I've also bought a set of packing cubes to keep my backpack as organised as possible.
