Hong Kong is bordered by mainland China in the North, and because of its location between Europe and Australasia it's a popular destination for stopovers. The city itself is vibrant and exciting, with a world famous skyline and an amazing mixture of architecture. Hong Kong has so much to offer, it's hard to know where to begin.
I spent one day exploring the city at the end of my G Adventures Tour, Beijing to Hong Kong Express, and so here are four places I would recommend for any first time visitor:
1) A Symphony Of Lights
A Symphony of Lights is a light and sound show that begins daily at 8pm at Victoria Harbour. It's the world's largest permanent light show where over forty buildings participate with their own style of lighting and lasers. To get the best spot, try to get there a little early and head to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.
2) Victoria Harbour & The Star Ferry
Don't just head to Victoria Harbour at night though for the light show! The harbour and skyline is equally as impressive during the day. You can catch the famous Star Ferry across the river for amazing views of the city.
3) Victoria Peak
It's arguably impossible to tire from admiring Hong Kong's city skyline, so to see the skyscrapers from above head over to Victoria Peak. It's the highest point in Hong Kong and the view is incredible. There's a free observation deck which can either be reached by tram or taxi, but be sure to make sure the taxi driver has their meter on! Many drivers will try their luck and attempt to charge visitors well above would it would cost with the meter on.

Located on Lantau Island is Tian Tan Buddha, or "The Big Buddha", a 34 metre high, bronze statue. It can be reached via the Ngong Ping cable car which gives beautiful views of the island and the buddha as you approach it. It can take a couple of hours to get there from Kowloon, but it's definitely worth the trip.

Hong Kong is a popular stopover destination, but it can also fit in well with a longer trip around Asia. There are frequent flights to cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, and it's also easy to enter mainland China from here too.
