Hanoi was the first place I visited whilst in Vietnam and I loved it. The thousands of scooters and motorbikes, small side streets packed with family run shops and pop up street-food stalls with plastic stalls to sit on - it all adds to the chaotic charm. Of course it was a culture shock at first!
I loved just wandering around the streets, especially watching the crazy amounts of things the Vietnamese manage to fit on their motorbikes. From hundreds and hundreds of eggs, to a family of four on one bike whilst a mother breastfed her baby. The city is certainly crazy...
Day 1:
-Start the morning by visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum which costs less than £1 entry. After your visit there are many stalls outside the museum where you can take a break, and grab some lunch & a cold coconut.
-You can then walk to the Temple of Literature which is incredibly pretty and quiet considering it's right in the middle of Hanoi.
-For dinner, Namaste is an amazing Indian restaurant. It's slightly more upmarket but still incredibly cheap. A main costs around £3.
Day 2:
-Take a couple of hours to walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, taking a look at Ngoc Son Temple and the red bridge. If you're a pale westerner like myself, be warned that many of the locals will ask for photographs with you!
-For this afternoon, hop in a taxi (make sure it's metered!) and head to Omamori Spa for some pampering. It's run by visually impaired people and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing. A 60 minute Swedish massage will set you back around £5.
-There are so many places to eat within the Old Quarter but Qua Cho Que was the first place we ate at during our trip and I loved it. Slightly more expensive than street food but still incredibly cheap. The fresh spring rolls were delicious.
Day 3:
-Start the day by wandering around the Old Quarter. Walk through all of the little streets and watch the locals eating Pho on plastic stalls, selling fresh produce at the market or even getting their hair cut on the corner of a road.
-This afternoon head a little further out of the city centre to Truc Bac lake where you can hire a swan pedalo, and then catch a Water Puppet Show at the Thang Long Theater to experience some Vietnamese culture.
-For dinner and drinks stop off at the Lantern Lounge which has a really chilled atmosphere. The cocktails are reasonably cheap and the fried spring rolls are great too.
