A couple of weeks ago my sister & I had a short break in Rome. Previous to this I had absolutely no idea you could go away for so cheap. I'm hoping I wasn't the only person that didn't know this, so today I thought I'd give an overview of how we did it on a budget.
(Per person but based on 3 nights for 2 people traveling including flights, transfer, hotel, sightseeing tour, tour of the Colosseum & even food!)
Flights (£60 return from London Gatwick):
Now this is what really shocked me. I had no clue that flights could be so affordable. I guess it all depends on what time of the year you want to travel, and how early in advance you book it. This was a trip in January, but as the weather wasn't the reason for the trip we weren't at all bothered by this.
Coach Transfer with Terravision (equivalent of £6.45 return):
Not technically a coach transfer in that it didn't drop us off outside our hotel. But it did drop us off at the main train station nearby which was a two minute walk away.
Hotel (£125 each for three nights) at the Hotel Ariston:
There were loads of hotels around Rome at a very similar price, and this one even included breakfast and free Wifi. There's no way you'd find a hotel for this cheap in London!
Food (For four lunches and three dinners approximately £65)
Food in Rome is simple and cheap. It wasn't difficult to find great places to eat for lunch for under £5 (Pinzere did the most amazing pizzas for €3.50), and going out for dinner each night also wasn't too expensive. A spaghetti carbonara in most restaurants was around €8. Amazing!
City Sightseeing Tour Bus 48 Hours (£28):
I'm sure that we could have used public transport and it would have been cheaper, but this was such a fun way to see the city. You can get on and off as many times as you like, so it was great for seeing all of the tourist attractions.
English guided tour of the Colosseum (approximately £15):
This was the only thing that we had pre-booked to do on our visit. It was such good value for money - it allowed us to skip the huge queue of people waiting to buy tickets, and it got us an hour long tour of inside the Colosseum.
Total = £299.45
Now I'll admit I did go over this amount slightly. I made one trip to Kiko, and also ate far too much ice cream. But it just shows you can still visit other countries on a budget.

I would love to go to Rome one day~ Seems like such a beautiful place to visit and by the sounds of it, it can be achieved with a smaller budget.
